Statement of Teaching and Learning Beliefs
We believe that:
- Learning occurs best when learners are personally engaged in the learning process and perceive the learning focus to be of relevance or interest to themselves and their careers.
- Learners differ (from person to person, and the same person from time to time) in their learning styles.
- Creative and critical thinking skills are essential to effective learning and living
- Learning is a life wide and life long process
- Effective learning results in the ability to apply and transfer that learning to multiple situations
- The use of technology can enhance the learning process
- Good learners are able to reflect on their own learning
Therefore, we endeavour to:
- Provide learning experiences and materials which learners perceive to be relevant, interesting and challenging
- Make students aware of their own learning styles
- Give learners a wide variety of learning opportunities which may suit their style
- Structure learning activities so that they foster creative and critical thinking
- Move our learners from learner dependency to learner independence by incrementally providing both the skills and the opportunities for students to become autonomous.
- Provide opportunities for learners to synthesise different aspects of their learning across multiple contexts
- Be thoughtful and creative in our use of technology in the learning process
- Provide a variety of assessment techniques to enable the learners to monitor their own learning
- Model our beliefs by reflecting on our own practice as teachers, by keeping current with developments in our field to continually refine our teaching practices, and, above all, by maintaining our professional passion.
