    A hostage situation

by Mohd Al Hashemi (CTA)
   October 2007

Two masked men ran towards a store called Virgin Megastore, they were hiding behind a CD collection section. The police searched for them everywhere but did not know where to find them. I knew where they were hiding but I was not sure whether I was to alert the police about their whereabouts or keep quiet. Suddenly one of the men took out his gun, pointed the gun towards me, and told me to enter the store. Everything turned upside down, the situation turned from a police chase to a hostage situation.

They locked the doors and told us all to stay down and not even move a muscle or they will start firing at us. We were all scared, there were about twenty people inside the store, most of whom were women. The men started talking to each other, one man had a very deep voice, it looked like they were trying to come up with a plan on how they should escape. The place was completely covered by the police, all the entrances and exits were blocked, it looked like there was no way out for the masked men. Twenty minutes passed and it looked like the men knew what they were supposed to do and were ready to instigate their plan. They took all the men, including me, and took us towards a strange room. We were about six men excluding the masked criminals, the place was just filled with fear, we were all frightened not knowing what the masked men would do to us. They opened their bags and took out syringes, it looked like they knew what they were supposed to do from the start. Suddenly they injected me with the syringe and I passed out.

I opened my eyes, I saw the policemen inside the store, it looked like everything was over, the masked men were lying on the ground, dead. The plan failed, the police started interrogating the hostages to see if they could gather information about the masked men. I tried to explain and give them all the information as detailed as possible. As they were asking questions one of the men answering questions had a really deep voice . . .

You should be able to

You need to download an Article Review Form and complete it for each reading. (Acrobat, or use Word if you would like to type your answers.)

Your teachers will grade your summary using these criteria (Word or Acrobat).Click to download the student article review form (PDF version)

Downloads

Download the form (Adobe Acrobat, PDF 29kb) for your reading summary. The form also has a marking scheme so you can see how you will be assessed. You can also download in Word if you prefer to type your answer.
